Ramdas Lamb and Paula Stockman Allerstorfer of Sahayog Foundation and photographer Dana Forsberg discuss the  on-going project teaching photography to rural girls in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The unique role of girls and woman in the elimination of poverty and community change is addressed through this photography project targeted at high school age girls. The girls are not only learning technical skills, but also using photography as a method of self-expression. The work of the students is shown and the practical application of the project explored.

Update from Summer 2010

It was great to see the girls again!  I am so excited to say that a couple of them are making money by doing portraits of people in their village. Its amazing, in just one year the girls are creating income with their cameras.  The government hired Sushila to be the census photographer in her village. We hope that in time the families will see more value in having their daughters educated and working.  They have learned a new skill that contributes to the family income.   These girls had their horizons expanded and the self-confidence increased.  With newly found confidence and support of their families they were able to believe in their dreams, consider a different life for themselves- at least an education, and possibly even a career.

India Through Girls Eyes is a unique project jointly conceived and undertaken by Dana Forsberg and Sahayog Foundation.  The Foundation’s efforts are geared toward giving village youth in Central India opportunities to further their education, gain a greater sense of self-confidence, imagine their world and themselves in new ways, and realize some of their dreams.   The present project uses the medium of photography to allow village girls to express their interests, talents, and aspirations. All donations received for the project will go to help the students further these ends.
